a present mind: mindful eating (part 1)

:: Mindful Eating

Your fibrous skin / melts in my mouth — / green flecks of flavor, / still tough, unbruised, / part of the fabric of earth, / soul food

This month, I will focus on mindful eating. I cannot take part in discussions about world hunger and theoretical conversations about whether we can feed the growing global population until I examine my own eating practices and do everything I can to eat as ethically, sustainably and responsibly as possible.

I will focus on a different aspect of mindful eating each week. Starting today, my focus is on consuming only the food I need, which also encompasses not eating calories that do not nourish. This week, I will eat less, eat well, eat simply, eat slowly and cultivate a feeling of thankfulness for the food that passes through my body, for it gives me another day in which to experience the world’s beauty as a living being.

  1. Oh, I need to read this post EVERY DAY! EVERY DAY! I put way too much crap in my body and I use to not do that. I believe you really are what you eat . Thank you for that simple and smart reminder! I will do the same. (or at least I’ll try, Dana!) HA! I’ve been eating lots of fresh veggies from the garden and tons of fruit… but I’m guilty of that cookie or donut too. (BAD choice!)

    • Stacey, I’m glad you’re also going to eat mindfully this week. Let me know how it goes. I am abstaining from Coca-Cola, which is incredibly difficult for me. That difficulty only shows how entrenched I am in the surplus food economy — one in which extra (and largely unhealthy) calories are easy to come by. It shouldn’t be this hard to not eat too much …
